OS X Mavericks includes more than 200 new features, including the Maps and iBooks apps coming to Apple computers, placeholders and tabs inside the standard Finder file manager, improved multi-display support, new kernel-level technologies to achieve new levels of power efficiency, and performance, a completely new version of Safari.

Hi-tech.

Fast performance and long battery life are two features of the Mac that our users really value. With OS X Mavericks we've gone even further. We've reviewed every layer of the operating system, from the platform to the applications, to achieve energy savings while improving responsiveness. Here are just a few of the innovations that optimize your Mac and make it more efficient.

Timer Coalescing - the task is to intelligently group several small low-level operations for joint execution. As a result, the processor is more likely to experience idle periods in which it can enter a low-power mode and conserve battery power. In some cases, CPU activity is reduced by 72%, which is very important for laptops. At the same time, Apple promises that the technology will not affect the performance and responsiveness of the system in any way.

App Nap - allows you to save energy when working with multiple applications. Thus, OS X detects when a program window is completely blocked from the user's view by other windows. And if in such a window the application does not perform any work for the user (playing music, downloading files, checking mail, and so on), then App Nap minimizes the resources allocated to the program. When the user returns to this window, the OS instantly returns full functionality to the application. The technology works in a similar way to Safari tabs, where only visible pages work at full strength. Thanks to App Nap, CPU usage can be reduced by up to 23%. By the way, the Safari browser also has Power Saver technology, which analyzes the content displayed on the screen and reduces the load on those elements that are not visible. In addition, resource-intensive content such as Flash animation may be stopped by the browser, so the user must manually launch it.

Compressed Memory - allows you to increase the speed of your computer. Running multiple applications can fill up the RAM, making the system noticeably less responsive. Now, when RAM becomes full, OS X Mavericks automatically compresses inactive data, freeing up significant space for current tasks. As soon as the compressed memory elements are needed, the OS quickly decompresses them. Thanks to this, in some cases the system becomes 1.4-1.5 times more responsive.

Safari Power Saver - unnoticed by you.

For the battery too.

Many websites display animations using power-hungry plugins, which can drain your battery excessively. OS X Mavericks solves this problem. Safari's new Power Saver feature detects when you're paying attention to content and when you're not. The animations in the center of the page play as normal. But if they're in the background, Safari's Power Saver pauses them. You will see a still image and the animation will not play until you click on it. This way, content you don't find interesting won't drain your battery. With Safari Power Saver, your processor consumes up to 35% less power when browsing websites with plugins.

Compressed memory.

Mac gets faster and more responsive.

The place is freed up.

The more memory your Mac has at its disposal, the faster it runs. But if you have multiple apps open at the same time, your Mac uses more memory. OS X Mavericks features in-memory compression technology that frees up Mac memory as needed. When your Mac runs out of free memory, OS X automatically compresses the data of inactive applications, freeing up some memory.
